Toyama City covers an area that spreads from the 1,000-meter depths of the Toyama bay, up to the peaks of 3,000-meter mountains. The city is blessed with a natural landscape where the sea and land are intertwined over a 4000-meter change in altitude. Fed by the melt waters flowing down from the Tateyama Mountain Range, Toyama bay is known as a "natural preserve" where you can enjoy the seasonal fruits of the sea such as firefly squid, Japanese glass shrimp, and yellowtail.
A magnificent mountain sightseeing route, the pride of Japan, connects Toyama City and Omachi City. In spring, snowplows carve out the road, creating 20m-high walls on both sides, called the “Yuki-no-Ohtani” (Towering Wall of Snow). In autumn, colorful fall foliage arrayed under a ropeway allows visitors to enjoy splendid natural panoramas.
This art museum was opened in August 2015 as a symbol of "Toyama, Town of Glass". The building was designed by globally renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Constructed from a variety of materials including aluminum, glass and granite, its form expresses an image of the Tateyama mountain range. An installation produced by the studio of contemporary glass art guru, Dale Chihuly, has become a symbol of the museum.
"Toyama Black" is said to have its roots with the construction workers during the reconstruction period following WW II. They devised the dark, soy sauce seasoned, noodle soup, as a side dish to eat with rice. The black soup has a strong impact. The depth of flavor, and variations between each store's recipe, make it fun to eat and compare.
